CTC President’s Report - August 2024
Swim, Bike, Run, Rinse, Repeat
Thanks for checking out the August President’s report. Items of note this month are a new date for the End of Season Party, a bit of strategic direction difference with the club and my introduction as CTC President. But first, an acknowledgement of one of our sponsors:
Sponsors:
This month we are highlighting our Silver Level Sponsor North Rim Adventure Sports
If you are in need of some bike gear, or bike maintenance, please check out our long-time CTC sponsor, NorthRim Adventure Sports.
End of Season Party – SAVE THE DATE
October 17th from 6-9 pm
The club will hold a “End of the Season Summer Party on Thursday, October 17th from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. Current club members will receive an Evite with additional details. Contact membership@chicotriathlonclub.com if you have any questions about your membership status.
Moving Forward
Triathlon is hard enough as a sport, and we want the Chico Triathlon Club to support our members as best it can. Over the years, the club has done a lot of different things and done them well. This comes at a cost—mostly the cost of our volunteers' time and energy. Therefore, we are going to work toward doing fewer things better. We would like to make sure that all of our members are enjoying the benefits of the club and nobody is getting “overworked” so we are going to try to focus our efforts on the things that matter most to our club. If you are interested in giving feedback/input or sharing your ideas about the direction of the club, please let me know. You can email me at president@chicotriathlonclub.com.
Black Butte Triathlon
Thank you to everyone who volunteered and raced the Black Butte Triathlon. This event is one of our club's key focus areas, and we all know that many hands make light work. We are asking for additional people to help with the BBT Planning Committee. The event has been a great success, with 2024 being our best year yet.
If you like BBT as much as I do and want to ensure we can continue to make it happen, please consider helping with the planning committee. Please email the BBT Race Director, Shawn Hughes at amigohughes@gmail.com as soon as possible and ideally before 10/31/2024.
Thank you again for giving your time and effort to this event.
Bike Repair Station Completion
The Chico Triathlon Club would like to congratulate our own Jack English on the completion of his Eagle Scout Project! This project was a Bike Repair Station located at the Honey Run Covered bride. If you haven’t been out there in a while, I would suggest stopping by to take a look. It is a great resource for our community and the CTC is happy to have supported Jack in this effort.
Race Results
New results since the last president’s report include Tri for Reals and Lake Lure Sprint. Thanks to Tyler for compiling the race results.
Athlete of the Month:
August’s Athlete of the Month is Al Masterson! Despite the fact that Al is no longer based in Chico, he continues to inspire CTC athletes to do hard stuff and continue to be active. Congratulations Al! You Rock!!
Another opportunity to challenge yourself

Volunteer Opportunity:
The club has not identified any current volunteer opportunities. We will update you as those opportunities present themselves.
The Uniform Store is Closed
The Chico Triathlon Club Uniform Store at Voler has closed. We expect to do another order in the winter/spring, so if you need some more tri gear, keep your eyes open for that.
CTC branded shirts and apparel can be ordered anytime through Squadlocker.
Training:
Swims:
The Friday Morning One Mile open water swims will continue “officially” for one more week. The “Season” ends on Labor Day, so if you are in town on 8/30, meet at 6:30 to 7:00 AM on the north side of the pool. Swim at your own pace and all abilities are welcome.
Rides:
The Friday Rides are Canceled for now
River Road Time Trials: The next River Road Time Trial is Thursday September 5th Registration opens at 5:30 PM and the first rider goes off at 6:01. We’ll gather at Allies Pub after the event where the first round of drinks is on the club for all current members.
Wednesday 50s: The Wednesday 50s are community group rides that leave from Rosedale Elementary school every Wednesday during daylight savings time. The “Fit 50” and “Fun 50” depart at 5:32 PM and the “Fast 50” leaves at 5:30 PM (note the time change from 6:00 PM). Group rides are a great way to improve your fitness and bike handling skills and the Fun 50 is the one best suited to newer riders.
Jenni’s Sunday Ride: Since tax season is over, look for Jenni’s no-drop Sunday Ride announcements on the CTC Facebook page.
Runs:
Saturday Morning Runs: The Saturday morning runs meet at Five Mile Recreation Area near the bathrooms. There’s an 8:00 AM “dog” run and a slower paced run that leaves at 9:00 AM. Check the CTC Facebook page for updates and starting times.
Tuesday Night Run: The Tuesday night run meets at One Mile (northside) at 5:30 PM.
Check the CTC Facebook page for updates and starting times.
Introduction to the New President
While we are all missing Greg Watkins, and he leaves big shoes to fill, I, Justin Waller, have agreed to step in as interim club president.
For those of you who do not know me, I have been part of the Chico Tri Club since 2010. I have served on the board for most of that time and thoroughly enjoy working with this special group of people.
I am a mid-pack athlete (on a good day) and enjoy training more than “racing.” I have completed 6 Iron Distance races and try to complete one 70.3 distance race every year. This keeps me training and keeps me off the sofa.
I look forward to seeing you all out there training and racing.
May the waters be clear, the wind be at your back and keep the rubber side down.
Justin Waller
CTC Board President
